The story of the aristocracy
Home to senior clergy, scholars, aristocracy and knights. Their legacy has given Vollenhove its élan, with imposing manor houses such as Oldruitenborgh, De Oldenhof, Marxveld and the castle ruins of Toutenburg. Vollenhove had an open connection to the Zuiderzee. The arrival of the Afsluitdijk meant saltwater became freshwater, heralding the end of fishery. Until the Noordoostpolder was reclaimed in 1942, Vollenhove was a popular seaside resort with a beach at De Voorst.
