As well as being active in nature, these villages and towns are well worth a visit. The fortified city of Steenwijk boasts plenty of shops nestled between its old canals and city ramparts. There are also many authentic shops hidden in this town, selling all manner of curiosities and artisan products. Blokzijl and Vollenhove are former Zuiderzee towns. The shops are housed in characteristic buildings. Oldemarkt is on the edge of Weerribben-Wieden. This village used to be known for its piglet market and the butter market. Nowadays, it hosts the Lambertus market on Ascension Day. The Weerribben markets are held here during the summer.
