North of Steenwijk can be found the Eeserveld. Where the landscape consists of an alternation between forest, heathland, hollow roads, agricultural plots and meadows. Here nature and cultural history come together. Not just water in our National Park. Also forests and traces from the Ice Age. The perfect place for a nice and quiet walk.
A landscape from the Ice Age
The penultimate ice age created the lateral moraine near Steenwijk of which the beautiful Eeserveld is part. Eeserveld has been sold to Staatsbosbeheer where it is now maintained by its volunteers. The Eeserveld has a rich history, about which there is much to learn. Learn more about the history
Hiking through the seasons
During all seasons it is a good idea to take a walk through the Eeserveld. Autumn with rising dew and coloring leaves is perhaps the most beautiful time. Then the surroundings are most impressive and you can enjoy the peace and nature. There are several walks to be made through the area, with routes of 7, 9, 14 or 17km. Fun for young and older.
Highly recommended is a hike that takes you past the watchtower of Woldberg. From here there is a view of the entire area and you can even see Steenwijk. Many of the walks also start close to this spot where there is ample parking for the car.
